Guest Post: ‘Mind Games’ (A Cassie Scot Novel)

MindGames_medI have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing the first two books in this series, so when I was contacted by Christine Amsden to see if I’d like to review Book three and take part in her blog tour, I eagerly agreed.  You can read the blog tour post here. Today, I have the pleasure of posting a Guest Post from Christine, after which you’ll find the link to my book review 😀

The World is Full of Blank Pages
My Duty is to Fill Them

A lot of people ask me why I write or what inspires me to write. To tell you the truth, the answer varies day by day and year by year. I have grown up writing, and writing has been a part of growing up. I have always worked out my own conscious and subconscious issues through the written word.

Some people see music and hear it in their heads. Some see stone and picture the sculpture hiding within. Some see numbers and must bring order to the mathematical universe. My husband is an engineer; he is driven to figure out how to make new ideas work.

I see a world full of blank pages and it is my duty to fill them.

Ever since I was a little girl I loved the beginning of the new school year. Nothing thrills me more than a blank, untouched notebook or a pencil freshly sharpened for the first time. Even now, as I type this into a word processor document, I can practically smell the wood shavings. I like to keep a notebook handy when I write and I confess I am a bit wasteful. I always want a new one. It’s just not the same after I’ve filled in a few pages. I tear them out, throw them away, and try to pretend it’s new, but that only lasts for so long. Cute, little notebooks with hard covers are my favorite because they look new much longer.

I don’t need inspiration to put words on a blank page (or even into a blank computer document). It is who I am. The more difficult motivation is to finish what I’ve started once the words have destroyed the perfect potential of the blank page.

People also often asked me how old I was when I started writing. I say I was eight, and my first story was about Cabbage Patch Dolls going to Mars. After some early short stories I knew I wanted to be a novelist, yet I did not finish my first novel until I was 27. (Note: This depends upon how you define “finish” – I do have a couple of completish manuscripts which were never peer edited, revised, or otherwise made it past a rough draft.) I finished Touch of Fate because I needed to prove to myself that I could. I needed to know that I had it in me to be more than the blank page.

After Touch of Fate, I knew I could do it. So my motivation changed. Now I wanted to see if I could do it again. Those of you who are paying very close attention may have noticed that Touch of Fate was published in 2006 and The Immortality Virus in 2011. That’s quite a gap! And indeed, it was harder for me to finish the second book than it was to finish the first. This was partly because of life – I had a baby late in 2005 and another in 2008. But it was also because I had gone fro simply wanting to finish something to trying to decide what sort of writer I wanted to be. Touch of Fate is paranormal suspense. The Immortality Virus is far-future dystopian science fiction. The Cassie Scot series is urban fantasy. Who am I? What do I write? I didn’t know, but I wrote The Immortality Virus while I was trying to figure it out and ended up getting that published too.

The Cassie Scot series has been the easiest and most natural thing for me to write. I fell in love with the character from the start and to be honest, I didn’t care what genre it was. There was a story inside me that wanted to come out. I started work on that series in 2009 and had it largely complete when the first book came out in 2013, meaning I have been able to release the entire series in not much more than a year. The motivation for writing this series was Cassie. She made me do it!

Two secondary characters from that series are now making me write sequels. I’ve finished Madison’s Song and am working on Kaitlin’s Tale as I type.

I’ve tried to write one other book in the midst of all this. It struck me that every book I’ve written for the past few years (5 books in 5 years, going on 6 books in 6) has relied on Cassie Scot: ParaNormal Detective. This isn’t a series meant to be read out of order. So what if that first book didn’t do well? Out of near desperation, I forced myself to think of a new idea and spent many (disconnected) months working on it. The idea is… fine. The characters are… fine. The plot is… complicated. And ultimately the only thing motivating me to write it was a paranoid vision of how my publishing future would look over the next five years if Cassie Scot didn’t take off.

In case you’re wondering, that’s not a good reason to write a book.

You’ll be happy to know that I’ve buried it, though it was a costly lesson (in terms of time). Kaitlin needs me to tell her story right now, and when I’m done with her I’ve decided I need to let another character come to me. If no one shows up right away, maybe I’ll work on a writing how-to book or something to pass the time.

BLURB

He traded my death for love. I wasn’t given a choice. His decision has caught up with us, so now I am a living, breathing catalyst to war between Heaven and Hell.

The violations he committed saved my life. Since the collision, he’s appeared everywhere. In my hospital room, my school, even my house. He shows up in my paintings, my drawings, in all of my art projects. I can’t stop thinking about him.

He says his name is Gabriel, and he doesn’t understand what’s happening to him. He doesn’t know how I can see him or why he loves me in ways that should be impossible for a Celestial.

My obsession grows. I want him to hold me, kiss me—give all of himself. For every day he protects me, the consequences loom darker and taller. Soon, they’ll crash down on us. Yes, the war is about to begin.

My review can be found here.

Excerpt:

“Why was she so upset with you, Gabriel?” I asked.

“I can’t read her mind.”

“Oh right, how silly of me.” I rolled my eyes. His thoughts were somewhere else, so my sarcasm didn’t register with him.

“I’ve never had to cloak myself before.”

“Oh, with your other humans, you mean?” My voice came out strange.

Gabriel turned fully and looked at me. His eyebrows lifted. “Right…”

“How many others have you had?”

“I don’t know, thousands.”

Holy. Crap.

I leaned my forehead against the window, trying to hide the flare of jealousy.

“Gaia.” A gentle hand reached around and pulled me back toward him. I couldn’t meet his stare.

“They were humans that lived before you.”

“Girls?” Why did I sound sulky? Oh, right, because I was a terrible actress. Gabriel’s quiet laughter drizzled over me. “Babies. Some growing into women and others into men. Many never grew up.”

“Did they see you?” Did you kiss them?

Gabriel didn’t reply at first. Then the back of his hand traced my cheekbone down to my mouth.

“No, I didn’t.”

My breath hitched. I must have heard wrong. His eyes focused on my lips, and my gut clenched.

He let go of me too fast. An arm hid his expression as he fell back into his seat. I leaned over, my palm molding to his face. I needed him close.

When it slid down his neck, a muffled groan slipped from him. “Please don’t touch me, Gaia.”

“You started it.”

“I know—I won’t. We have to stop this.”

“Crap! You’re not making any sense—you know that? This is bullshit!”

Gabriel pushed his seat up and faced me, his irises shimmering like water. “Gaia. I don’t know why the archangels haven’t come for me, but humans and angels—” He cut himself off, then continued. “I screwed up. Since I’m still with you, they must have given me another chance.”

And just like that, I transformed into pure instinct all over again and jumped into his lap. Clearly I could not be trusted near this—this…angel.

The steering wheel jabbed into my back, but I barely noticed. The pain was just another reason to get closer, much closer to him. My fingers slid into his hair, tangling with it. I tugged him to me and pressed my mouth against his.

Gabriel reacted immediately. He crushed me so tight that my breath wheezed out. The seat lowered underneath him, and he pulled me with him, devouring my mouth.

“We can’t be together?” I panted.

“No, we can’t.”

“Never?” Desperate, my tongue found his. He shook his head against my mouth. My stomach burned with need.

One at a time, I forced the words out in clipped gasps. “I can’t ever touch you again?” Gabriel groaned. I could feel him under me. So male, so alive.

“No.”

I want him so much it hurts!

Gabriel’s eyes opened beneath me. He rocked me closer, and I moaned.

“Will you be visible to me?”

“Sometimes.” The tiny suckling noises as he feasted on my lips sent fire straight to my womb.

“Please, promise me you’ll be visible always.”

His hands moved up to my face and held me out from him. The kiss he gave me was too light on my lips, and I shuddered.

“No, not always. But I promise that you will see me every day.”

I absorbed the kisses, lucid enough to know they were the last ones I would ever receive from Gabriel.

Although Marina Myles lives under the sunny skies of Arizona, she would reside in a historic manor house in foggy England if she had her way. Her love of books began as soon as she read her first fairy tale, and grew by leaps and bounds when she discovered Nancy Drew/Agatha Christie mysteries and rich, historical romances.

Dreaming of becoming a published author, she wrote her first ‘gothic’ story at age eleven. She went on to study creative writing at Southern Methodist University— where she received degrees in Communications and English Literature. During her time in Dallas, she had the unique experience of being a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader.

Now with her loyal Maltese close by, she relishes the hours she gets to escape into worlds filled with tortured heroes, strong heroines, and their fiery—but not easily attained—love affairs. She’s busy being a wife (to her Italian-born husband) and a mother (to her two beautiful daughters), but she is never too busy to hear from her amazing readers.

PROLOGUE

Giselle Swenov adjusted her bridal veil with a smile. At the thought of marrying the most wonderful man in the world, her heart beat melodiously—and as Bucharest’s leading operatic protégé, she nearly belted out a glass-shattering note, too.
Restraining herself, she cracked open the dressing room door and stare into the chapel. She knew her family members wouldn’t be in attendance, but she scoured the pews for them anyway. From day one, her mother and father had disapproved of her groom. What was they’d said? “Are you mad, Giselle? Lucian Ivanu is socially inferior—and his connection to the Dark Arts means he isn’t right for you.”
Giselle’s pulse leapt as she glimpsed Lucian at the altar. Ironically, he looked nothing like a warlock. With flowing white-blond hair, gray eyes that reminded her of storm clouds over the Black Sea, and a knee-buckling grin, he resembled a prince ready to sweep her off her feet.
Although Giselle wanted to stare at him all day, she shut the door before he saw her in her bridal gown. She refused to let bad luck seep into their wedding ceremony.
“You look beautiful, my dear,” Ileana Zǎpǎda, Bucharest National Opera’s premier patron, called out behind her.
“Thank you Doamna Zǎpǎda,” she replied anxiously. At least Ileana was here to help, unlike her mother.
“Come,” the elegant woman urged. “Take a final look at yourself as an unmarried woman.”
Giselle swiveled around to survey her appearance in the mirror. Cascading golden-brown curls framed her carefully made-up face and a sense of optimism lit her eyes. She had become the bride she’d envisioned as a girl and she could hardly contain her excitement.
“You look a stunning.” Ileana Zǎpǎda stepped in beside her and met her gaze in the mirror. “But you are a little pale.”
“Nerves, I suppose.” Letting out a self-conscious laugh, Giselle studied Doamna Zǎpǎda. Her refinement spoke of the lofty social standing Giselle’s family wished she would reach. She winced.
“Sit with me and have some tea,” the socialite proposed. “Tea studied my nerves before I married my second husband.”
Giselle swept her train off the floor and settled into a chair at a small table. While she laid her bridal bouquet in her lap, Ileana poured two steaming cups.
“Why are you being so nice to me, Doamna Zǎpǎda?” Giselle asked as she accepted the tea cup.
The woman sighed. “It broke my heart to learn that your parents disowned you. Word spreads quickly through the opera house—and because I’m a mother hen to all my celebrated singers, I knew you’d need some moral support on your wedding day.”
“You must be a loving mother to your own children,” Giselle said gently.
Ileana’s expression turned icy. “I never had children of my own. I have a stepdaughter, but we aren’t particularly close.”
“Well, I sincerely appreciate your help.” Giselle smiled. “Clasping the buttons on the back of my dress would have been impossible on my own.”
As she sipped her tea, her entire body warmed instantly and she began to perspire. I must be more nervous than I thought…
Ileana went on. “I greatly admire your vocal talent, Giselle. I also admire your extraordinary beauty. Unfortunately, I’m about to sabotage both of those exceptional attributes.”
Alarm pierced through Giselle. She tried to protest but before she could speak a word, her throat burned as if she’d ingested hot coals. She clawed at it while Ileana studied her the way a snake zeroes in on its prey. Giselle tried to extend her hand, but her limbs prickled with pain. In an instant, her skin shriveled dramatically and her knuckles became hideously gnarled.
“Poor, unknowing girl.” Ileana stood over her. “I’m an enchantress of the Dark Arts and I slipped an accursed potion into the tea pot when you weren’t looking.”
Giselle opened her mouth to scream, but no sound escaped her lips. With great effort, she crawled to the mirror like an invalid and stared at her reflection. My God! I’m a mute, old woman!
Heart stuttering, she managed to pull herself to her feet. She flung open the door and entered the chapel. All heads jerked in her direction. When she locked eyes with Lucian, he stared at her in astonishment yet without an ounce of recognition.
All hope evaporated from her body as he thundered, “Is that woman wearing my bride’s dress? Somebody find Giselle!”
“The hag must be playing a cruel joke!” a guest accused.
“Escort her outside,” Lucian roared to an usher.
A burly man took Giselle by the arm and dragged her out the front door. Once he disappeared back into the church, another strong arm grabbed her unexpectedly and thrust her inside an awaiting carriage.
Giselle quaked with terror as she stared at the enormous man hovering over her.
“I work for Ileana.” He grunted. “She commands that you become her servant woman—until she grows tired of you and decides to turn you back into your normal self.”
Giselle made another futile attempt to cry out.
The henchman crossed his arms and shook his head. “You won’t be talking, singing, or screaming for a very long time, Miss Swenov. That should make for a quiet ride to Dantel House.”
